It's been awhile...but we're "Humming Along"

Friday 28 December 2018

Christmas is over and we wait for the new year to begin.

I haven't posted since December 18th.  I had the best of intentions last week to get my blog post ready and then on Thursday, the West Coast of British Columbia had an unbelievable windstorm.  Wind gusts of over 100 km per hour on parts of Vancouver Island.  Trees down, power line down!  I was out about noon on Thursday to pick up my husband.  I could see the debris on my way there but luckily there were no trees blocking my way.  I the space of 10 minutes as I waited for him to pack up, two trees came down and blocked our road out.  We had to take the long way home.  Thankfully a man in a truck was ahead of me and every so often he would stop and clear a branch out of our way.  It was definitely scary!  Our power went out early afternoon on Thursday and didn't come on for 29 hours.  We actually were one of the lucky ones - some people in the area just go their power back on Christmas Eve.

This taught me a valuable lesson - not only to be prepared with blog posts and not to leave them to the last minute.  More importantly it reminded me of the importance of an emergency kit with flashlights and candles and other supplies.

Here are a couple of images of the damage.  This is not my house!

Now that we're back to normal, I've been playing with all of the new products in the Occasions Catalogue.  Today's card features the Humming Along stampset.  Dale Hampshire did an amazing job demonstrating this stamp set at OnStage in Orlando.  I loved how he used the Brusho Crystals to colour in the hummingbird on his card, so I tried the same on this one.

We're lucky to have hummingbirds on the West Coast all year round.  I was walking by a neighbours the other day and at first I could only hear it - the wings are moving so fast, they make a noise!  Then I noticed him trying to get something out of the feeder.  Amazing!

Instructions

  1. Score Night of Navy Cardstock (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") in half to make card base.
  2. Emboss a piece of Mango Melody Cardstock (4" x 5 1/4") using Subtle Embossing Folder.
  3. Stamp hummingbird image on Watercolour paper using Tuxedo ink
  4. Sprinkle a small amount of Yellow Brusho crystals on humming bird and then a very small amount of Prussian Blue.  Spray gently with water and let the magic happen!
  5. Let dry and then fussy cut out (or use the coordinating Framelits)
  6. Adhere to Mango Melody Cardstock using Dimensionals.
  7. Tie a piece of Polka Dot Tulle around card from and time a knot.
  8. Stamp sentiment in Tuxedo Black ink and adhere to card front using Dimensionals

Christmas Crackers

Tuesday 18 December 2018

Today I'm sharing some Christmas Crackers I made using the last of the Holiday Designer Series Paper.  Did you use all of the beautiful paper you bought from the Holiday Catalogue?  I'm trying very hard to use mine and not save it because it's too beautiful to cut :)

Check these out!  I'm really pleased how they turned out.

They are very easy to make and are perfect for hostess gifts or for your beautiful Christmas table.  It's fun to fill them with little gifts or chocolate!

Instructions:

  1. Cut Designer Series Paper 6" x 8" - you can get two crackers from a 12" x 12" piece of Designer Series Paper.
  2. Score the short side at 1 3/8", 2 3/4", 4 1/8" and 5 1/2"
  3. Score the long side at 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 5 1/2" and 6 1/2"
  4. Fold along each score line and burnish with your bone folder.
  5. Using the envelope punch board, punch out out at 2" and 6" along long side.  I started at the top with the first punch out being 1/2 of the punch hole.  Then fold along the score line and punch out.  You will end up with holes down both sides of the paper starting from the top to the bottom.  Both the top and bottom will be half a hole.
  6. Add a piece of Tear and Stick tape to the 1/2" fold and fold together overlapping the 1/2" piece to the rest of the cracker.  If you lay the paper flat and fold in half to start, it makes it easier to line up the edges
  7. I made tags from the Lots of Labels Stamps and Everyday Label punch
  8. I tied ribbon to one end and filled with treats.  Close by tying ribbon to the other end.

Making Christmas Bright

Friday 14 December 2018

Today's card is a "happy mistake" card.  I started out with a completely different idea in my head, but I'm really pleased with how this card turned out.  I don't do "clean and simple" cards typically, so I love when they come out that way.

Here's my card

I've been embossing Vellum Cardstock lately.  You have to be a bit careful with which embossing folder you use as some may cause the vellum to crack.  I tried the Swirls and Curls first for the card and it was a failure.  I switched to the Cable Knit Embossing Folder and really like the result.

I stamped the sentiment from Making Christmas Bright in Shaded Spruce for the wreath and Real Red for the sentiment and punched it out.  It is popped up with Dimensionals and a Star paper clip finished it off.  I love the card and hope the recipients will as well.

Everything I used on this card is available in my Online Store.  You can check out the list of supplies below.

Kylie's Demonstrator Training Blog Hop - December

Tuesday 11 December 2018

Thanks for stopping by!  Today I'm participating in Kylie's Demonstrator Training Blog Hop.  I'm so excited to be part of this training program and happy to participate in this Blog Hop! The purpose of the group is for the group of Stampin' Up! Demonstrators that are part of the program...to share ideas and to learn from each other...to help us in our Stampin' Up! Business.

Today you will "hop around the world" and check out the amazing projects created by these very talented demonstrators.  You are currently visiting Melva Peters from Ladysmith on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.  Please take some time to check out all of the blogs on the list below!

My card features a stamp set that will be available in the Occasions Catalogue - Incredible Like You -  which becomes available starting January 3, 2019 as well as a new embellishment.  I love this set and the bonus is that it coordinates with a beautiful project kit.  I'll be holding a class in the new year that features the kit.  Stay tuned for details!

Here's the card I created.  I seem to be using bright colours lately - maybe it is the stamp sets from the new catalogue.  They just seem to call for bright colours.  Today I used Poppy Parade and Flirty Flamingo!  Don't they go so well together!

Instructions

  1. Score Flirty Flamingo Cardstock (4 1/4" x 11") in half to make card base.
  2. Emboss a piece of Vellum Cardstock (4" x 5 1/4") using Subtle Embossing Folder
  3. Adhere on to card base using Snail - I placed the Snail in the middle of the piece so that it was hidden by the card front.
  4. Stamp the full flower in Flirty Flamingo on a piece of Whisper White Cardstock (3" x 4").
  5. Stamp detail flower in Poppy Parade.
  6. Stamp small leaves in Tranquil Tide and stamp over with bigger leaves in Old Olive.
  7. Stamp sentiment in Poppy Parade.
  8. Adhere stamped piece to Poppy Parade Cardstock (3 1/4" x 4 1/4")
  9. Adhere to card base using Dimensionals.
  10. Adhere Gingham Gala Adhesive-backed Sequins.
  11. Stamp sentiment on inside of card using Poppy Parade
  12. Stamp flower using Old Olive for stem and Poppy Parade for flowers

I love the Subtle Embossing Folder.  It works well with Vellum Cardstock and also with regular cardstock.  If you remember the Textured Cardstock, this is a very similar feel.

Everything I used on this card will be available in my Online Store starting January 3rd.  You can check out the list of supplies below.
